Janani Suraksha Yojana is a safe motherhood cash transfer scheme under the National Health Mission, run by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. It promotes institutional delivery among pregnant women from BPL and SC/ST families by providing cash assistance at the time of delivery in government or accredited private hospitals. The scheme is available across all states and union territories.

How to Apply
Register at Anganwadi or Sub-Centre
offlineAs soon as pregnancy is confirmed (ideally before 3 months), register with your local ASHA worker, ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife), or Anganwadi centre. They will fill your MCH (Mother & Child Protection) card which is required for JSY benefits.
Complete Antenatal Checkups
offlineAttend at least 3 antenatal checkups at the government sub-centre, PHC, or CHC. These are free of cost and mandatory to remain eligible for JSY cash assistance.
Deliver at Government or Accredited Hospital
offlineDeliver at a government health facility (PHC, CHC, District Hospital) or NHM-accredited private hospital. Inform the ASHA worker before delivery — she will accompany you and help with paperwork.
Collect Cash at Hospital
offlineAt the time of delivery, show your MCH card, Aadhaar card, BPL/ration card, and bank passbook to the hospital desk. The JSY cash (₹1,400 or ₹1,000 depending on state/area) is transferred to your bank account or paid in cash at the facility.
ASHA Worker Incentive
offlineYour ASHA worker also receives ₹600 (rural, LPS) for facilitating the institutional delivery. She can help you complete all paperwork and follow up if payment is delayed — contact her or the PHC if cash is not received within 7 days of delivery.
