Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Jal Shakti launched on 15 August 2019 to provide safe, adequate, and regular piped potable water to every rural household in India through functional household tap connections (FHTC). The original target of 2024 has been extended to 2028. As of Q1 2026, over 75% of rural households have tap water connections. Connection is free for BPL/SC/ST/marginalised households; a nominal fee of ₹100–500 may apply in other states. Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) manage local water supply systems.

How to Apply
Contact Your Gram Panchayat / VWSC
offlineVisit your Gram Panchayat office or the Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) / Pani Samiti representative in your village. Inform them that your household does not have a tap water connection and you need one under JJM.
Get Your Household Registered in Village Survey
offlineGram Panchayat / VWSC maintains a list of all households without tap connections. Ensure your household is on this list. If missed, provide Aadhaar, ration card, and address proof to the Panchayat to get registered.
Water Supply Infrastructure Work
offlineOnce the village is selected for JJM, state engineers and contractors lay pipelines and develop a water source (borewell/dam/river tap). This is a government infrastructure project — households do not pay for the pipeline work. Monitor progress on jaljeevanmission.gov.in → "District Dashboard."
Household Tap Connection
offlineAfter the pipeline is laid to your village, JJM plumbers connect a tap to your house from the distribution network. The connection inside the house (from the metre box to kitchen/courtyard tap) is covered under JJM for BPL/SC/ST households free of cost.
Register Complaint for No Connection
online / offlineIf your village is covered under JJM but your household has not received a connection, call the JJM helpline 1916 or log a complaint on jaljeevanmission.gov.in → "Citizen Corner" → "Report Grievance." Alternatively, visit your Block Development Officer.
