Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) is a government-backed life insurance scheme launched on 9 May 2015 under the Ministry of Finance to provide affordable life insurance to Indian citizens. For just ₹436 per year (auto-debited from your bank account), the scheme provides a ₹2 lakh life insurance cover for death from any cause — natural or accidental. No medical examination is required to enrol. The scheme covers individuals aged 18–50 years; those joining before age 50 can continue coverage till age 55 by paying the annual premium. As of 2026, over 20 crore people are enrolled under PMJJBY.

How to Apply
Enroll at Your Bank
offlineVisit your nearest bank branch (SBI, PNB, HDFC, any nationalized or participating bank) where you have a savings account → ask for PMJJBY enrollment → fill the simple consent-cum-declaration form → provide Aadhaar, bank account number, and nominee details → submit. No medical exam or complicated forms required.
Enroll via Internet Banking or Mobile App
onlineMost banks allow PMJJBY enrollment through net banking and mobile apps. Log in to your bank's net banking → go to "Insurance" or "Jan Suraksha Schemes" → select PMJJBY → confirm your bank account and nominee details → submit consent. ₹436 is auto-debited.
Enroll at Post Office
offlineIf you have a Post Office savings account, visit your nearest post office → fill the PMJJBY enrollment form → submit Aadhaar and nominee details. The post office forwards your enrollment to the insurance company (LIC or partner insurer).
Premium Auto-Deducted
online / offlineOn 1 June (or next business day) each year, ₹436 is automatically deducted from your linked savings bank account. If account balance is insufficient, the debit fails and coverage lapses for that year. Keep minimum ₹436 balance around 1 June annually.
File Death Claim (for Nominee)
offlineIn case of the policyholder's death: the nominee should contact the bank where the PMJJBY account is held → submit claim form, original death certificate, FIR (if accidental death), discharge certificate → provide nominee's bank details → bank forwards claim to insurer → ₹2 lakh is credited to nominee's bank within 30 days.
