Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Applying for DL before 30 days of LL - system rejects! Must wait minimum 30 days from LL issue date. Calculate days before applying.
❌ Wrong vehicle class selection - MCWG (bike with gear) ≠ MCWOG (scooter). LMV (car) separate. Choose correct category else test fails and need to reapply.
❌ Using wrong/old address proof - must match Aadhaar address OR submit address proof <3 months (electricity bill, rent agreement). Address mismatch = rejection.
❌ Not practicing parking - 50% fail in parking test! Practice parallel parking (biggest challenge), figure-8, reversing. Go slow, take time.
❌ Ignoring LL expire date - valid only 6 months. If expired, need to reapply for LL (pay fees again, give test again) before DL test. Track expiry!
❌ Not carrying physical DL/RC - even with DigiLocker, some cops ask physical. Carry till smart card arrives. Temporary slip enough but print and laminate.
❌ Forgetting to download from DigiLocker - instant access to DL/RC! Don't wait for physical card (takes 30 days). DigiLocker updates in 1-2 days after issue.
❌ Not updating address after moving - DL/RC has old address, get challans/notices at old place, miss them. Update address online (₹200 fee) or visit RTO.
❌ Vehicle insurance lapse - even 1 day lapse = ₹2,000 fine + jail + no claim bonus lost. Set reminder 15 days before expiry, renew online immediately.
❌ Not getting NOC when moving states permanently - driving with other state RC beyond 1 year without NOC illegal (₹5,000 fine). Apply NOC early (takes 30 days).
❌ Assuming online DL test at home - NO! Online application yes, but test at RTO physically. Biometric + physical presence mandatory.
❌ Not linking mobile number - RTO sends SMS for test dates, DL dispatch, challan alerts. Provide active mobile, update if changed.
❌ Paying agent/tout - 99% RTO work online now! Touts charge ₹2,000-10,000 extra. Do yourself online, save money, faster too.
❌ Driving with expired DL - grace period ZERO! 1 day expired = no DL = ₹5,000 fine. Renew 1 month before expiry to avoid hassles.
❌ Wrong form filled - Form 1 for LL, Form 2 for DL, Form 20/21 for RC, Form 29/30 for transfer. Using wrong form = rejection.
❌ Not clearing pending challans before NOC/transfer - NOC not issued if traffic fines pending. Check and clear all e-challans first.
❌ FASTag not recharged - toll plaza chaos if balance insufficient. Minimum ₹100-200 balance always. Enable auto-recharge or use UPI/wallet link.
❌ No pollution certificate - forgotten often! ₹10,000 fine + RC seizure (vehicle towed). Get PUC immediately, keep in RC pouch.
❌ Assuming license portable across countries - Indian DL valid in 180+ countries BUT needs International Driving Permit (IDP). DL alone not enough! Some countries (USA - some states, Australia, UK, Singapore - conditions apply) accept Indian DL, check before travel.
❌ Not taking DL test seriously - practice required! 30% fail in first attempt. Practice gear shifting (most common mistake), parking, slope test minimum 1 week.

Can I drive vehicle registered in another state? What about permanent shifting?

TEMPORARY STAY (Job transfer, study, travel): YES, can drive vehicle registered in ANY state anywhere in India. No formalities. Indian RC valid PAN India. Example: Car registered in Delhi, you working in Bangalore → drive with Delhi number plate, no issue. PERMANENT SHIFTING (>1 year): Two options: OPTION 1 - Keep old registration: Allowed for 12 months (some states 24 months). Just drive with original state RC. But local RTO can ask why residing here with other state vehicle (for tax evasion check). OPTION 2 - Transfer to new state (RECOMMENDED): Apply for NOC (No Objection Certificate) from original state RTO → Get NOC (30 days process, ensure no pending challans, tax clearance) → Within 6 months of NOC (NOC valid 6 months), visit new state RTO → Re-register vehicle → Pay new state road tax → New RC issued with new state registration number → New number plate affixed. ROAD TAX: If original state lifetime tax paid, new state gives rebate (credit for remaining years). If periodic, may need to pay difference. BEST PRACTICE: If relocating permanently (new job, buying property etc.), transfer RC to new state. Avoids legal hassles, challans sent to correct address, easier to sell locally. If temporary (1-2 years), continue with old RC.

What is difference between third-party and comprehensive vehicle insurance?

Two types of vehicle insurance: THIRD-PARTY (TP) INSURANCE: Covers OTHERS (third-party) damages only. Example: Your car hits someone → Their person injury medical costs paid (₹15 lakh max) + their property damage (₹7.5 lakh max). YOUR vehicle damage NOT covered! MANDATORY by law - cannot buy vehicle without TP insurance, cannot drive without it (₹2,000 fine + jail). COST: ₹1,500-₹3,000/year (fixed by IRDAI - same across insurers). COMPREHENSIVE (Package) INSURANCE: Covers EVERYTHING: Third-party damages (as above) + Own Damage (OD): Your vehicle repairs/replacement due to accident, theft, fire, natural calamity + Personal accident cover: ₹15 lakh for owner. OPTIONAL but highly recommended. COST: ₹5,000-₹25,000/year (varies by IDV - Insured Declared Value, vehicle age, city, no-claim bonus). WHICH TO CHOOSE? New/expensive vehicle: Comprehensive (peace of mind, EMI protection, resale value). Old/cheap vehicle (<₹2 lakh current value): TP enough (OD premium might exceed vehicle value!). ADD-ONS: Zero depreciation (full value claim), engine protection, tyre protection, roadside assistance, passenger cover. CLAIM: Cashless at network garages OR reimbursement. NCB (No Claim Bonus): 20-50% discount if no claims previous year. RENEW on time - even 1 day lapse loses NCB!
