A marriage certificate is the official government proof that your marriage is legally registered. Without it, you cannot easily update your surname on Aadhaar or passport, add your spouse as a nominee in bank accounts and insurance, apply for a spouse visa, or claim spousal benefits under most government schemes. Since 2006, the Supreme Court of India has made marriage registration compulsory for all citizens, regardless of religion, and every state now offers an online application route.
Why You Need a Marriage Certificate
- ●Applying for a spouse visa or adding spouse details to your passport
- ●Opening a joint bank account or adding spouse as nominee in LIC/insurance policies
- ●Changing your surname or address on Aadhaar, PAN, and Voter ID after marriage
- ●Claiming family pension, gratuity, or spousal benefits from an employer
- ●Applying for a joint home loan or property registration in both names
- ●Proof of marriage required for adoption, surrogacy, or child custody matters
- ●Mandatory document for many foreign embassy and OCI/PIO applications

How to Register Online — Step by Step
Every state runs its own e-District portal for marriage registration. The process below uses the Delhi e-District portal as an example — the button names and flow are nearly identical across most states (Maharashtra's Aaplesarkar, Uttar Pradesh's e-Sathi, Karnataka's Kaveri Online).
- 1Go to the Delhi e-District portal at https://edistrict.delhigovt.nic.in
- 2Click 'Sign-Up here' on the homepage and register using your mobile number and Aadhaar (OTP verification) if you don't already have a login
- 3Log in and click 'Apply for Certificates' from the dashboard menu
- 4Under 'Revenue Department' services, select either 'Registration of Marriage (Hindu Marriage Act)' or 'Registration of Marriage (Special Marriage Act)'
- 5Fill Form: enter husband's and wife's personal details, date and place of marriage, and witness details in the online application form
- 6Click 'Upload Documents' and attach scanned copies of ID proof, address proof, photographs, and the marriage invitation card (PDF/JPEG, usually under 200KB each)
- 7Click 'Make Payment' and pay the registration fee via net banking, debit card, or UPI
- 8Click 'Submit Application' and save the Acknowledgement Number / Application Reference Number shown on screen
- 9Track progress anytime using 'Track Application Status' on the portal with your Acknowledgement Number
- 10Visit the assigned SDM/Marriage Registrar office in person (with originals) along with both witnesses on the appointment date for verification
- 11Once approved, download the certificate from 'Issued Certificate' section on the portal, or collect a signed copy from the SDM office
Under the Special Marriage Act, a 30-day public notice is displayed at the Marriage Officer's office before registration, during which anyone can raise an objection. If an objection is filed, the registration is put on hold until the Marriage Officer resolves it — factor this delay into travel or visa plans.

After Registration: Update Your Other Documents
- ●Aadhaar: Update surname/address via UIDAI's Self Service Update Portal using the marriage certificate as address proof
- ●Passport: Apply for reissue with the marriage certificate to change surname or add spouse's name
- ●PAN Card: File a correction request via NSDL/UTIITSL if changing your surname
- ●Bank accounts and insurance: Submit the marriage certificate to add or update your spouse as a nominee
- ●Voter ID: File Form 8 on the National Voters Service Portal for name/address change post-marriage
Common Problems & How to Solve Them
- ●Application rejected for mismatched details: Ensure names, dates of birth, and addresses match exactly across all uploaded ID documents
- ●Witnesses unavailable on verification date: Contact the SDM office in advance to reschedule; most portals allow appointment rescheduling online
- ●Marriage certificate needed urgently for visa: Some SDM offices offer a 'Tatkal' or expedited counter for an additional fee — ask at the office directly, as this varies by district
- ●Marriage performed years ago with no documentation: You can still register with an affidavit and two witnesses testifying to the marriage, though it may require additional verification or a court order in some states
Once registered, your marriage certificate is valid nationwide and permanently recorded with the Sub-Registrar — you will not need to re-register it even if you relocate to a different state.
