Aadhaar Mobile Number Update 2026: Online via App, Fees & Status

8 min read1 October 2026

Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number receives every OTP you need for DigiLocker, PAN-Aadhaar linking, ITR e-verification, PM Kisan eKYC, EPFO claims and bank KYC. If that number is old, lost or switched off, many government services stop working for you. The good news: since 28 January 2026, UIDAI lets you change your registered mobile number from home through the new official Aadhaar app. This guide explains all three ways to update it, the correct 2026 fees, and how to check if the update is done.

Quick summary: The fee for a mobile number update is ₹75 (from 1 October 2025). No documents are needed. You can do it through the Aadhaar app (OTP + face authentication), at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre (fingerprint/iris), or at your doorstep through an India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) postman.

Why Your Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number Matters

  • ●Aadhaar OTP login on myAadhaar, DigiLocker, UMANG and the Aadhaar app
  • ●Linking PAN with Aadhaar and e-verifying your Income Tax Return through Aadhaar OTP
  • ●OTP-based eKYC for PM Kisan, Ayushman Bharat card, e-Shram and scholarship portals
  • ●EPFO services such as UAN activation, KYC update and online PF claims
  • ●Downloading e-Aadhaar and ordering the Aadhaar PVC card
  • ●Opening bank accounts, buying insurance and getting LPG subsidy through Aadhaar eKYC

3 Ways to Update Mobile Number in Aadhaar (2026)

Aadhaar App (from home)₹75 · OTP on new number + Face Authentication · People who still have the old registered SIM in their phone
Aadhaar Seva Kendra / Enrolment Centre₹75 · Fingerprint or iris scan · Anyone, including people whose old number is lost or deactivated
IPPB Postman (doorstep)₹75 · Fingerprint scan on postman's device · Senior citizens, rural residents, people who cannot travel
Documents neededNone for a mobile number update — only your Aadhaar number and the new mobile number
Time to reflectUsually a few days; UIDAI can take up to 30 days in some cases

Method 1: Update Mobile Number Using the New Aadhaar App

UIDAI's new Aadhaar app (different from the older mAadhaar app) added the mobile number update feature on 28 January 2026. It confirms your identity using your phone's front camera (Face Authentication) and an OTP on your new number. To register on the app, you must select the SIM of the mobile number currently linked with Aadhaar, so this method works only if that old SIM is still active in your phone.

  1. 1Install the official "Aadhaar" app published by Unique Identification Authority of India from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Do not use the old mAadhaar app — it does not support mobile number updates.
  2. 2Open the app, choose your language, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and accept the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.
  3. 3Select the SIM card that holds your currently registered mobile number, complete Face Authentication by looking into the front camera, and set a 6-digit PIN for the app.
  4. 4On the home screen, open the "Services" tab and tap "Update Mobile Number". Your current registered number will be shown in masked form.
  5. 5Type the new 10-digit mobile number you want to link. An OTP will be sent to this new number — enter it and tap "Verify".
  6. 6Complete Face Authentication again when prompted. Sit in good light, remove spectacles or mask, and hold the phone at eye level.
  7. 7Pay the ₹75 fee using UPI, debit card, credit card or net banking inside the app.
  8. 8Save the Service Request Number (SRN) shown on the confirmation screen. You will also get an SMS once UIDAI approves the update.

Download only the app published by "Unique Identification Authority of India". Fake Aadhaar update apps and websites charge extra money and steal your OTP. UIDAI never asks for your OTP, PIN or face scan over a phone call, WhatsApp or SMS link.

Method 2: Update at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Enrolment Centre

If your old number is lost, deactivated or you cannot pass face authentication, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra (run by UIDAI) or an Aadhaar enrolment centre at a bank or post office. Your identity is confirmed with fingerprint or iris scan, so you do not need access to the old number.

  1. 1Go to https://bookappointment.uidai.gov.in to book a slot at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. (Bank and post office centres usually accept walk-ins — find one via "Locate an Enrolment Centre" on https://uidai.gov.in.)
  2. 2Select your city and centre, then click "Proceed to Book Appointment".
  3. 3Enter a mobile number you can access right now, fill the captcha and click "Generate OTP". Enter the OTP to continue.
  4. 4Choose "Aadhaar Update", enter your Aadhaar number and tick "Mobile Number" as the field to update. Enter the new mobile number.
  5. 5Pick a date and time slot, pay the ₹75 fee online if asked, and download the appointment slip.
  6. 6Visit the centre with your Aadhaar card (or Aadhaar number). Fill the Aadhaar Update/Correction form, or let the operator enter details on screen.
  7. 7Give your fingerprint or iris scan, pay ₹75 if not paid online, and collect the acknowledgement slip with the 14-digit Update Request Number (URN).

Method 3: Doorstep Update Through IPPB Postman

  1. 1Call the India Post Payments Bank helpline 155299 or visit https://www.ippbonline.com and raise a doorstep service request for "Aadhaar Mobile Update". You do not need an IPPB account — non-customers can also book.
  2. 2You can also walk into your nearest post office and ask for the Aadhaar mobile update service.
  3. 3The postman or Gramin Dak Sevak visits your home with a UIDAI-approved biometric device.
  4. 4Share your Aadhaar number and new mobile number, then give your fingerprint for verification.
  5. 5Pay the ₹75 fee and collect the receipt. The URN is shared by SMS/slip for tracking.

How to Check Your Aadhaar Mobile Update Status

  1. 1Open https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in in your browser.
  2. 2Click "Check Enrolment & Update Status".
  3. 3Select the ID type — URN (from centre/postman) or SRN (from the Aadhaar app) — and enter the number.
  4. 4Enter the captcha and click "Submit". The status will show as In Progress, Completed or Rejected.
  5. 5You can also call 1947 and share your URN/SRN to hear the status.

How to Verify Which Mobile Number Is Linked to Aadhaar

  1. 1Go to https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/verify-email-mobile.
  2. 2Select "Verify Mobile Number".
  3. 3Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number, the mobile number you want to check, and the captcha.
  4. 4Click "Send OTP". If the number is already linked, you will see the message "The mobile number you have entered is already verified with our records". If not, the page tells you the number does not match.

Your mobile number is not printed on the Aadhaar card, so you do not need a new card or PVC reprint after the update. Once you get the confirmation SMS, all OTPs will start coming to your new number.

Common Problems and Their Fixes

  • ●Old SIM lost or deactivated: You cannot register on the Aadhaar app. Use an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, bank/post office centre or IPPB doorstep service — they verify you by fingerprint.
  • ●Face Authentication keeps failing: Try in daylight, remove glasses and mask, and keep your face centred. If it still fails, visit a centre instead of retrying many times.
  • ●Fingerprint not matching at centre: Ask for iris authentication. If both fail, you may need a biometric update (₹125), which also covers the mobile update in the same request.
  • ●Status stuck for more than 30 days: Call 1947 or email help@uidai.gov.in with your URN/SRN, or use "File a Complaint" under Contact & Support on uidai.gov.in.
  • ●Request rejected: Check the reason in the SMS, then submit a fresh request. Keep your payment receipt for any refund query.
  • ●SIM linked to Aadhaar by the telecom operator: This is only KYC for your SIM. It does NOT register the number in UIDAI's records — you still need to update it through one of the methods above.
  • ●Same number for family members: One mobile number can be registered with more than one Aadhaar, for example parents linking their number to their children's Aadhaar.
